Its been 3 months since our wedding in April, and the vagaries of work and setting up a home together had kept us from taking our honeymoon earlier. But finally, Shayna kicked her itinerary planning into full gear, and found a great-priced cruise through Greece and the Mediterranean. Since the cruise left from Venice and our return flight departed from Rome, I couldn't imagine not visiting some other Italian cities, especially Florence, which my college friend, Bob Mehler http://www.facebook.com/mehlerbob#, had always raved about.
Our Delta Delta Delta flight departed FLL on July 9th at 11:57 am, and with a 3 hour layover in JFK, we were in Venice 9:40 am local time. Shayna played the honeymoon card and got us upgraded to First class on the first leg of the trip. The stewardess asked if we had ever seen the episode of Friends where Monica and Chandler don't get upgraded as honeymooners http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nT6GVmMpyk8.
(On the airplane, I kept wondering what tap water in Venice would taste like, perhaps like one-thousand year old Roman, compromised pipes.)
In JFK, the Delta gate agent is super-nasty, and Shayna is afraid to approach her to get upgraded - she finally does, but we don't... However, the stewardess on the JFK-Venice flight is exceptionally kind. She gets us a bottle of Prosecco (which we then lug through Venice and end up gifting to the concierge) and fluffy blue blankets from First Class (which we Snuggie around us to protect from the drafts of the exit row.
We had brought Ambien, but I didn't take it, afraid of opening up the exit door in mid-flight, in the middle of somnambulating and thinking I was opening the fridge door. We made do with some fancy benadryl and a gin and tonic instead.
